Healthcare Simulation Technology Newsletter September 2024

The growing need for Long-Term Care and Geriatric Patient Simulation

The population is rapidly aging and growing sicker and we need to be prepared. (article)  Despite Canadian seniors being only one-fifth of the population they account for half of health resources. (article)

"We need about 800 geriatricians across the country working in partnership with family doctors to care for the needs of the current aging population. There are only 200 geriatricians in Canada at the moment."

Dr. Samir Sinha, head of geriatrics at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto (article)

The projection that increasing proportions of older individuals will be cared for by a smaller number of healthcare workers, exacerbates the existing challenges.

Researchers point out paradigm-shifting solutions include the use of simulation, incorporation of learner and patient perspectives, upskilling professionals outside of Geriatrics, and integration of practice across disciplines through Interprofessional Learning (article).

We have solutions to help enable simulation for this aging patient demographic such as the geriatric face skin accessory. The accessory easily and quickly converts SUSIE’s face and hair to that of an elderly patient for geriatric scenario-based simulations and skill training exercises.
